Studded Tires

We have been fortunate enough to have had a very mild winter. With no snow and above freezing days, this winter has felt like an extended Fall. Even Cyclrocross Nationals was bearable to watch! But here it is, the Wisconsin winter that we know so well. Still, with slush and ice glazing the streets, I still love riding. I may even like riding more! Even my girlfriend gets excited to ride to work.Added to our arsenal is the Nokain A10 650b studded tire (pictured on my 650b converted mtn bike). 650b may not be the popular size out there but I am glad there is a studded tire available . The A10 (also available in a 700c) may not have as many studs as other versions but it is fast, rolls very smooth, and tracks through the elements very well. I have found that working with different tire pressures you may get increased traction. We also carry many options in the 26" and 700c versions so check them out here.

I love winter and riding my bike through it makes it even more enjoyable! But as always, if you ride, walk, or drive, just be careful out there.

We measured a few tires that we our riding here in the shop-we'll give the tire, size/width, rim width and tire width at high recommended inflation. If you have a "tire/rim - inflated width" to add please do in the comments. We'll be adding more as they roll through -

Milwaukee Road Builds

We just built up a couple more Milwaukee Road bikes and they are looking great. This one is Brett's ride; full Shimano 5700 105 with some sleek Zipp bits and a nice Jandd rack to make it a bit more utilitarian. The black components and the deep green really compliment each other.

This one is a shop build so come through and test ride it if you would like. We focused on building it with more of a classic flare but opted with Shimano 5700 105 instead of bar end or downtube shifters, which still would function just as nicely. Threw on some Brooks accessories, Panaracer Tour Guard tires, and a Nitto M18 Rack and you have a fully functional randonneur!

I love seeing all these builds put together. It's great to see a bare frame get braze-ons installed in our shop, to coming back from our painter, and finally put together by our own mechanics. The results are always spectacular.

Wow, John has been putting our MKE Road to the test riding it through Austin's Greenbelt Trail. Fellow Ben's worker Jim and I did these trails when we went to NAHBS last year. Needless to say it got sketchy after some rain fell on beds of sharp rocks so I must commend you on powering through it on cross tires! Glad you're enjoying the bike. I'm sure our 29er can do the job too!

Had to pick up my jaw after seeing this beast built up. One of our dedicated customers brought in a 9Zero7 frame and asked us to get everything else for it. Top notch parts on here; Nuvinci hub, Phil Wood 150mm BB, White Industries Cranks, Phil Wood 135mm Disc front hub, Paul Melvin tensioner, White Brothers Snow Pack fork...there is nothing less than bling on this bike. Kind of strange not having 'gears' but if this was my bike, I wouldn't complain.

We've built a couple custom fat bikes in recent past including a Schlick Cycles North Paw for our good friend Dave. With fat bikes, you have to account for many nuances that don't apply to all other bikes like offset wheel configurations and 100mm bb shells. It's just been wonderful having to tackle a lot of these challenges and getting familiar with these builds. I like that more of these bikes are out on trails, beaches, and even on the road. If you've never ridden a fat bike in 10in of snow, you are missing out!

At the very top - MKS just took the O out of NOS for the 80's BM-7 BMX Pedal; now re-manufactured in black or silver cages.

In the middle - Is Silver the new black? Well, if Nitto's new M172 SSB handlebar doesn't sway some with its classic looks coupled with modern 31.8 clamp, heat treated durability and semi-ergo drop, we don't know what will. Currently available in 40 and 42cm widths.

Last but not least - MKS added one more version of their popular Promenade pedal. You can buy the traditional version with 9/16" spindle, polished body and champagne cages; the EZY version in the same colorway and now the EZY is available in all black. The EZY's are great for travelers, folders or even saving some space during storage.

Introducing ROWEROWA SZKOLA - (Thanks to all the folks who helped us out on the correction). Means "BICYCLE SCHOOL" in Polish in honor of the neighborhood. We are a full service center to empower you with everything you need to understand and command the maintenance and operation of your bicycle(s). With the deep deep talent pool we have here, just about every question you can muster can be answered. Additionally we provide consultation to help you use bicycles in conjunction with your current transportation choices or to help you make bicycling your primary choice. Many of us here are year round commuters and we know this city well. We will also be hosting evening Q&A's with local messengers to really help you get the perfect routes and advice.

We will be having these structured classes for up to 4 people Mon. through Wed. evenings from 6 to 8 pm usually. These classes are:

Wheel Building
Two consecutive Mondays. Please sign up for these classes at least two weeks in advance so we can order the parts you need to build your first wheel or wheel set. Learn the basics to building a traditional wheel - nothing crazy (right away anyways) 10% off parts and tools!

We LOVE doing this, and are excited to help you get as excited about cycling as we are. (Within limitation - some of us are truly nuts for bikes. But we can take you to crazy town if you like.)

The other reason we created this space is to provide a place for the cycling community to get together for events. Bike movies, club meetings, ride stops and starts and in-betweens, art events - you name it. Freeload Racks – Your Platform for Adventure

Freeload is a company from New Zealand that has designed one of the most adaptable racks I have put my hands on. It uses a strong cam system to latch on to either the seat stay or fork (even suspension forks!). It's ingenious triangular adjustable system allows you to install the rack with ease as well as angle it how ever you please. There are essentially two models: one that works with panniers and one that doesn't. Check them out here.

This is one of those items that can help solve problems for any mechanic. On top of being light and seemingly strong, this rack was designed mainly for dual suspension bikes but can also work on road bikes that do not have rack mounts. I wouldn't install this on a carbon bike, but as always, consult your mechanic if this is a suitable option for your bike. It is also very easy to take on and off. As we see more cyclists dabble in adventure biking and dirt brevets, I think we will see more great products like this soon.

As with the development of the original Bruiser; we wanted the riders to tell us what they needed, not the other way around. It's so important to get as much input as possible; but not just input, good input. As luck would have it, we had an opportunity to have another local rider with a lot of talent test out the new frame.
I've know Rick as long as I've known Antonyo and needless to say it wasn't too hard of a decision; always considering them the fixed duo of Milwaukee. With the pair of them on board with this project, you know this bike is going to be nothing short of incredible.

Also check out his post on Wisconsin trails and infrastructure. Politics aside, Wisconsin is a great place for cycling. From having the largest mountain bike series in the country to great trails and paths; we have it pretty good here! I've seen a ton of improvements to our paths and feel a lot more comfortable riding around town. Been pretty busy around here and I have a ton of stuff to post, but for now, let's talk about cyclocross! We have a great deal on Ultegra/Alex R450 wheels, perfect as a training set. Michelin Mud 2 and Clement Crusade PDX are in stock!Maybe this year I'll got off the mountain bike and actually do a cross race. Done in a private or group setting, and all inclusive and non competitive. For our special introductory rate, we’ll charge $40 dollars an hour for individuals and a $30 per individual per hour group rate for up to 6 people, so contact us now to schedule appointments. I personally have taught over 600 people in the last 8 years in both MPLS and MKE, and I have been a mechanic and member of the bicycle industry for 16 years, but the talent pool at Ben’s runs deep, and we’ll capitalize on our staff’s skills and areas of expertise whenever possible. Last weekend my buddy had his bachelor party up at Levis Mounds. All I have to say is that the weekend was epic; hanging out with my best buds having a blast and riding bikes. I captured the whole thing on my Go Pro 960 and am very happy with how all my pictures and videos came out. It was great to have a camera that is simple to use and is ridiculously durable and waterproof. Soon enough I'll have videos up but for $180 (minus memory card and chest or handlebar mounts) you get a fine product. I was even able to charge the camera through the USB port on the car stereo! These days I rarely leave the house without bringing my Go Pro along.

**On another note, we all have bells on our mountain bikes. If you don't have one on your bike, you have no idea how convenient it can be!

Milwaukee 29er Builds

Here's a customer's blue small Milwaukee 29er built up with Velocity Blunts and SLX hubs. He just got fitted this week and I'm pretty sure I'll see this bike on the trails soon!

This is a medium Milwaukee 29er test/display bike. We have a size run built up at the shop so swing by and take it out for a test ride. They are also available for rent, drop by or call for details. It's great to see a small army of these built up ready for the trails.

Speaking of trails...I just did 3 laps out at Cam Rock yesterday. Since there will be a WORS race next weekend, the trails are in tip top shape. Maps are on site as well as trail and direction markers. CORP did a fantastic job. I had a blast out there and encourage everyone to hit them up!

Lewis Ciddor's Polo Bruiser

Just got an email from a customer in Australia, Lewis Ciddor. He has been riding his Bruiser for about a year now, everywhere from Australia, Toronto, France, Germany, Switzerland, England to America. This past weekend he won the Australian Hardcourt Bike Polo Championships (AHBPC); his 6th consecutive tournament with the Bruiser. He finishes up his note, "Thanks so much, my Bruiser is by FAR my favourite bike I've ever owned, and I kinda just wanted to say so."

Cardinal from Lexington Ky Bike Polo had his Bruiser fitted with S & S couplers by Alex Meade Bike Works. Sounds like he's not too proud of the paint job (he called it "my sh1tty spray paint job"); but how hard bike polo is on frames/paint, we think that's exactly what the doctor ordered.
This is to the best of our knowledge the very first Bruiser with this upgrade.

Will this be the week Milwaukee breaks 40 deg? Hopefully, it's been gloomy and raining the last couple of days and it's putting a real damper on some trail riding. It will get nicer soon and I'm getting excited for some epic rides/brevets. It doesn't help that we just got some new Grand Cru cranks in (more sizes soon).

Schmidt SON Delux Hubs / Edelux LED Headlights

We are working on expanding our selection; but for now we have a pretty good stock of front hubs and the LED headlights. We are waiting for the Schmidt handlebar mounts ($38) so you can mount these 60cm headlights to the cronometro knob on your fork blade. But we've also seen Peter White use a Shimano Flight Deck computer bracket if your on a budget. More updates as parts arrive!

SKS Bottle Cage Adapter

I've been waiting for something like this to come out! I've used adapters that mount to the saddle rails but they've always looked wonky when I didn't have a water bottle on. SKS have created a water bottle cage adapter with the same cam system that is used on their ever popular Xtra-Dry clip on fenders (also pictured above).

I've done some long rides with this and it has worked great! I used a Velocity Water Bottle Cage because they're light and they really hold onto the bottle. Perfect for a track bike without water bottle mounts and it's easy to take on and off!

The weather during the ride into work did not look very promising to the racers of this year's MMI. But the clouds cleared up and with all the snow melted, it actually turned out to be nice day. Ben's was one of the stops during the race with a tire toss to clear the checkpoint. For some, it took almost a dozen tries to sink one in.

On another note, a customer rolled in with a rare treat. This is probably the first Jack Taylor I've come into contact with. The pinstriped boxes gave it away immediately. It's one gorgeous bike and in such great condition!

Prolly's MBC Road Frame

This is bringing back all sorts of memories of my first road bike; a pink splatter painted Diamondback. It also reminds me a little bit of a Trek's 2300 Carbon Three Tube bike I used to wrench on at my old bike shop. Oh the good ol' days.
There are already a few of these on the road and some in production at the moment. I'll have some more pics soon! Keep posted on Mr. Watson's site on updates of his build.

It's getting a bit toasty here in Milwaukee and I'm pretty excited to see people on their bikes again!

40 Degrees yesterday, snow today, and I just took apart my snow bike! Even though it doesn't seem like it, Spring is creeping up. If you've ever been in a bike shop on a sunny day in the summer, you understand how hectic it can get. So save yourself (as well as your fellow mechanic) a headache and bring in your bike for a tune-up now! Turn around time is about a day or two (compared to two weeks in the height of the season).
Regardless if you need any repairs or not, come by and check out the shop. We've been busy moving things and displaying a ton of product. While your at it, make sure you hassle Brett, Ben's Cycle's newest edition. Just joking Brett, he's a great guy and has a ton of experience with bike fittings and other related athletic performance analysis.

He also fronted the development of Saturn Cycling and Quark Women Cycling teams for a couple of years. His official title is 'Human Movement Scientist.' So if you want to get professionally fitted or even want to know what type of running shoe to get, he's the guy to go to.

Bill Nye the Science Guy says "Get rowdy on your bike." No, he really didn't say that but the dude likes to ride and that is pretty sweet in my book. Anyways, it's taking some time to catch up on things here after the little adventure Jim and I took out to NAHBS in Austin (a summary soon). But in the meantime, here's a little gem I saw at the show...

Paul Components Dual Brake Lever! Basically it is a lever that can activate both front and rear brakes. Tamie explained to me that it was designed for people that may not have the ability to use both hands. I'm sure it will work really well in bike polo. Pretty cool design and if I'm not mistaken, it can be switched from short or long pull (not 100% on that). They are opted to be released soon so we'll let you know when they arrive. Keep an eye out!
